PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for manufacturing citalopram at a low cost and in high yield, and to provide a new method for manufacturing a compound (compound [III]) represented by formula [III], which compound is a key compound in manufacturing citalopram. SOLUTION: Citalopram can be manufactured by reacting a compound represented by formula [IV] with 3-(dimethylamino)propyl chloride in the presence of at least one condensing agent selected from N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine and 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone.
