PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contour correction apparatus for image pickup in which a sense of incompatibility is eliminated regardless of the level of contrast. SOLUTION: The contour correction apparatus comprises a contour correcting signal generating circuit which generates a contour correcting signal from an image signal, an expansion circuit for widening an output of the contour correcting signal generating circuit, a control value generating circuit by which a control signal for controlling a gain of the contour correcting signal is obtained from the expansion circuit, a multiplier which regulates the gain for the contour correcting signal using the control signal, and an adder which adds the image signal and an output of the adder, so that a correction quantity of the contour correcting signal is reduced to eliminate the sense of incompatibility of an image when a contrast is high relative to the case that a contrast of a video signal is low.
