PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gateway device capable of connecting a PSTN user (a telephone) having a nationalwide scale at an IP terminal for an arbitrary communication protocol on the IP network side. SOLUTION: The gateway device has a plurality of kinds of communication-protocol control units, a memory in which a terminating information is stored temporarily in response to a telephone number at the IP terminal, and a processor controlling the startings of the communication-protocol control sections. In the gateway device, the processor transmits a connection-demand message to a terminal IP address indicated by an entry by a communication protocol indicated by the entry, when there is the entry corresponding to the terminating telephone number in the memory when the telephone number at the terminating IP terminal is specified from an exchange and a connection demand is received.
