A method of handling packets in a network. The Method includes receiving a packet including an IEEE MAC address field, which carries a MAC address of a network element, examining at least one sub-portion of the IEEE MAC address field, which sub-portion represents a set of elements to which the network element belongs within the network, but does not allow unique identification of the network element in the network and handling the packet responsive to the at least one examined sub-portion.
