<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method enabled to manufacture LiCoO<SB>2</SB>used as a positive electrode activator for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in an intended grain size from cobalt oxide having various crystal forms and grain size distributions. <P>SOLUTION: The cobalt oxide of either a spherical or a plate shape having any given grain size distribution is crushed into grains with a grain size, of which grains with a fillet diameter of 1 μm or less account for 50% or more of the total volume and those with a fillet diameter of 5 μm or more account for 1% or less as a grain size distribution including secondary grains with primary grains consisting of grains with a fillet diameter of 1 μm or less.
