<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system capable of preventing the leakage of information used in authenticating an article. <P>SOLUTION: A magnetic characteristic detection means 3 detects magnetic characteristic from a data carrier having a layer of magnetic material having magnetic characteristics and a magnetic recording layer recording the data imparted, and a data reading means 4 reads an ID. When a terminal 2 sends the detected magnetic characteristic and the read ID to an authentication server 1, the authentication server 1 compares the magnetic characteristic with a previously stored magnetic characteristic to authenticate the data carrier. When the data carrier is the true one, related data corresponding to the ID are sent to the terminal 2.
