A solid surface is treated by a friction tool with a relative velocity >=50 cm./sec. The surface treated may be one of the surfaces to be bonded or an intermediate layer placed on one of the surfaces. The process permits welding of dissimilar materials without previous lamination to be accomplished. The friction treatment may be combined with application of electric, heat or vibratory energy. The second surface may be liquid or solid and the surfaces bonded by applying pressure. The materials which can be bonded by the treatment include paper, plastic films, metal films and substances which do not bond readily e.g., PTFE. The friction tool may be rotary and is pref. surfaced with PTFE, nylon, steel alumina, BN3, acetal or epoxy resins. |
