<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To moderate rapid increase in output torque generated when an operation mode of a diesel engine is switched from a lean combustion mode suitable for normal driving to a rich combustion mode suitable for regenerating a filter disposed to an exhaust passage. <P>SOLUTION: Control patterns of intermediate opening of each valve opening in the lean combustion mode and the rich combustion mode are prepared. When switching between modes, that is, switching from the lean combustion mode to the rich combustion mode is performed, the control is performed through the control patterns of the intermediate opening sequentially, so that it takes several seconds to switch the combustion mode.
