PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit capable of realizing high image quality and miniaturization while coping with an environmental change. SOLUTION: A control circuit 306 changes a pixel reading mode in response to a temperature signal from a temperature sensor 315, and it is also possible to manually change the pixel reading mode. In concrete, if a user visually checks another thermometer etc. to determine that the ambient temperature is within a predetermined temperature range (e.g. 0-40°C) and performs a first operation using an operation button P, a control circuit 106 sets a whole pixel reading mode. If the user determines that the ambient temperature is out of the predetermined temperature range (e.g. lower than 0°C or more than 40°C) and performs a second operation using the operation button P, the control circuit 106 sets a partial pixel reading mode in response to the operation.
