PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new maintenance liquid for ink jet recording which is high in concentration of a coloring material, exhibits excellent cleaning properties even when applied for an ink jet printer using an ink containing a pigment, can be used by an existing ink jet printer without impairing its members and is excellent in anti-foaming property, and preservation and mold-proofing effects. SOLUTION: The maintenance liquid for ink jet recording contains at least water and an alkylene glycol monoaklyl ether of 0.3 to 15 wt.%. Furthermore, the maintenance liquid contains a polyhydric alcohol compound composed of a group of an acetylene glycol compound and/or a glycerin and glycol compound to improve cleaning properties.
