<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material guide device capable of surely preventing flap and disorder of sheet material by effectively guiding the sheet material even between piles, besides over the piles. <P>SOLUTION: This guide device 50 is provided with a paper delivery chain 6 for carrying papers 8 by holding them, a first and a second piles 9 and 10 to be loaded with the paper 8 to be carried by the paper delivery chain 6, and a paper separating mechanism 30 for switching paper feeding condition between a first condition wherein the paper 8 held by the paper delivery chain 6 is delivered to the first pile 9 and a second condition wherein the paper 8 held by the paper delivery chain 6 is passed through the first pile 9 and carried downstream in the paper feeding direction. Furthermore, this guide device 50 is provided with a guide rail 52 for guiding the paper 8, which passes through the first pile 9 while projecting upward, in the second condition. This guide device 50 is also provided with a wire 53 to be moved between a guide position for guiding the paper 8 between the first pile 9 and the second pile 10 and a waiting position retreated from the guide position.
