PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drastically reduce a release time lag, as for an automatic focusing device for optical equipment such as a digital camera and a video camera. SOLUTION: The automatic focusing device is provided with 1st automatic focusing means (1 and 4) for measuring a distance up to an object and performing the focusing of an imaging optical system based on the measured distance information, 2nd automatic focusing means (1 and 9) for performing the focusing of the imaging optical system based on information on the contrast of an object image obtained through the imaging optical system and a manual operating member (1b). And the 1st and 2nd automatic focusing means are repeatedly operated by the time when the manual operating member is operated after the power source is turned on, and when the manual operating member is operated, the 1st and 2nd automatic focusing means are made in non active state, and the focal position of the imaging optical system is settled.
