PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a CPP thin film magnetic head in which the side-reading can be prevented. SOLUTION: The CPP thin film magnetic head is provded with a lower shield layer, a lower non-magnetic conductive layer, a magnetoresistive effect element, an upper non-magnetic conductive layer and an upper shield layer in order, wherein current flows in the direction perpendicular to the film surfaces of respective layers which constitute the magnetoresistive effect element. In the CPP thin film magnetic head, the interval between the upper and lower shield layers at a part other than an element part where the magnetoresistive effect element is present is made smaller than that at the element part and monotonously reduced from the element part to the part other than the element part.
