PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an external preparation for skin having excellent bleaching effect and cell activating effect. SOLUTION: The external preparation for skin comprises an extract of a plant belonging to the genus Chimaphila of the family Prolaceae. The external preparation for skin comprises the extract of the plant and a specific pharmacodynamic component. The external preparation for skin comprises further one or more selected from an extract of licorice containing glabridin, glabrene, liquiritin and isoliquiritin, arbutin, ellagic acid, an extract of chamomile, vitamin C, vitamin E, glycyrrhizinic acid, glycyrrhetic acid, linoleic acid, tranexamic acid and zinc oxide.
