PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide silicon oxide particles improved in transparency without detriment to the properties inherent in silicon oxide. SOLUTION: An aqueous acid solution is added to an aqueous silicate solution to precipitate a silicon oxide, hydroxide or hydrate. The suspension containing the precipitate is heated to 110 to 300°C to form silicon oxide particles. The thus obtained silicon oxide particles have a spherical or ellipsoidal form, a mean particle diameter in the range of 1 to 50 nm, and a BET specific surface area in the range of 50 to 500 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
