Sulphoxides and sulphones are made by electrolysing, in the presence of molecular O2, a conducting soln. contg. at least (a) a cpd. chosen from an organic sulphide of formula R1-S-R2 and an organic sulphoxide of formula R1-SO-R2, where R1 and R2 are monovalent hydrocarbon radicals contg. 1-30C pref. 1-10C, and (b) cpds. contg. O, miscible with (a), pref. water. The solution is saturated with O2 by bubbling through. The sulphoxides are useful as polymsn. solvents and solvents for polymers in the prepn. and spinning of synthetic fibres, as solvents and co-solvents in the prepn. of dyes, paints and varnishes, as solvents for gases e.g. SO3, HCl, acetylene and ethylene oxide, and as selective solvents for unsatd. hydrocarbons contained in satd. hydrocarbons. The sulphones are lubricants, dielectric liquids and intermediates for therapeutic agents, hypnotics, insecticides and stable thermoplastic polymers. The process does not use corrosive catalysts are used in the chemical processes.
|
