PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling operation of a refrigerator and a method therefor are provided to control the temperature of a cavity within a short time to rapidly freeze stored goods, thereby freshly keeping the stored goods. CONSTITUTION: A rapid freezing mode or a general operation mode is selected(400). If the rapid freezing mode is selected, a temperature of a refrigerating compartment is detected(410). If the temperature of the refrigerating compartment maintains an appropriate temperature, a three-way stepping motor valve is opened to an evaporator of a freezer compartment to flow cool air into the freezer compartment(420). After predetermined time passes, the rapid freezing mode is automatically converted into the general operation mode(430).
