Method for the preparation of ion exchangers containing iron oxide and/or iron oxyhydroxide

Producing an ion exchanger containing iron oxide and/or oxyhydroxide comprises preparing a mixture of a vinyl monomer, a crosslinker, finely divided iron oxide and/or oxyhydroxide, a dispersant and a radical initiator; polymerizing the mixture in an aqueous phase at elevated temperature; and functionalizing the resulting bead polymer. Independent claims are also included for: (1) ion exchanger produced by preparing a mixture of a vinyl monomer, a crosslinker, finely divided iron oxide and/or oxyhydroxide and a dispersant; polymerizing the mixture in an aqueous phase at elevated temperature; and functionalizing the resulting bead polymer; (2) use of the bead polymer for adsorbing arsenic and for purifying drinking water, wastewater from the chemical industry and from refuse incinerators, for purifying leachate from waste disposal sites and for removing pollutants from liquids or gases.
