PURPOSE: An apparatus for searching a cell of a mobile communication system using multiple access, and a method therefor are provided to efficiently and promptly search for a cell by searching for the cell through multi-steps by using OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) symbol timing, an FC(Frame Cell) start point and pilot patterns. CONSTITUTION: A symbol synchronization acquirer(613) detects a symbol boundary of an inputted receiving signal. A frame cell synchronization acquirer(615) detects a frame cell boundary by being synchronized with the symbol boundary detected by the symbol synchronization acquirer(613). A pattern detector(617) is synchronized with the frame cell boundary for detecting reference signals by symbol intervals in a search interval, and detects patterns of the detected reference signals. A controller(611) compares the detected patterns with preliminarily stored patterns for detecting a base station to which a terminal belongs.
