Operation of a wireless radio device which is capable of communication in at least two radio access technologies (RAT), each of which has a different power consumption requirement, in which, after determining the power pack level of the device, a selection of one of the RAT is made, according to the power pack level. A threshold value, which is chosen to be above the level below which a RAT having a higher power requirement becomes unsuitable, may be used in selection. The threshold value may also account for high current-draw conditions. A false reporting of a RAT in order to force a network relocation, may also be employed. The operation may also include a switch to a RAT of lower power when the device is in stand-by mode. The device may also be powered-down if the threshold of the lower power RAT is reached. The monitored power-pack level may also be the voltage available at the battery.
