Agents for inducing early, long-lasting and increased immunity consist of suboptimal doses of antigen and sulphate esters of polymers, pref. dextran sulphate, polyvinyl sulphate, pentosan sulphate, laevan sulphate, heparin, chondroitin sulphuric acid or hyaluronic acid. The sulphate dosage is pref. 0.05-200 mg/kg. body wt. The agents can be used as vaccines, to induce antibody formation in hosts or in tissue cultures, or to produce antisera for immunological determinations. The sulphate increases the antibody titre and thus reduces the antigen dose, thus reducing side effects due to high antigen doses. The sulphates increase the gamma-globulin fraction in serum and can be used to increase specific and non-specific resistance to bacterial and viral infections. |
