937,643. Pistons. SEALED POWER CORPORATION. March 7, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 8753/62. Class 122 (1). In a piston and oil ring assembly for a non- vertical cylinder of an engine and comprising split rings 24, 26 axially spaced and urged radially outwards by an expander-spacer spring ring 28, means are provided to prevent or limit relative rotation between the spring ring 28 and the piston 10. The ring 28, which is of metal strip corrugated radially to form alternate inner and outer crowns 28a and 28b and has intermediate oil venting slots 28c, is provided adjacent each end with radially inwardly extending tabs 32, 34 that project into an oil drainage slot 10c in the bottom of the piston groove 19 to thereby limit relative rotation between the ring and the piston and thereby similarly limit relative rotation between the rings 24 and 26 and the piston. In use, the oil ring assembly is arranged so that the gaps 30 in the rings 24 and 26 are located adjacent the high side of the cylinder where the rate of oil accumulation is least. Specification 805,458 is referred to. |
