1400472 Olefin polymerization catalyst UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 6 Sept 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 41287/72 Heading C3P Olefinic hydrocarbons may be polymerized by means of a catalyst composition comprising (1) a Group IVA, VA or VIA metal halide chemically supported on an oxide of a metal of Group IIA, IIB, IIIB or IVB such that the atomic ratio of halogen to Group IVA, VA or VIA metal is at least 10 : 1, (2) an organometallic compound of a metal of Group IIA or IIIB and (3) a Lewis base modifier selected from organic phosphorus-containing compounds, organoamines, organoarsines and organosulphides. The metal oxide may be magnesium oxide having specified physical properties. A preferred catalyst, which is used to polymerize ethylene and propylene, comprises a TiCl 4 /MgO reaction product, triisobutylaluminium and diethylphenylphosphine.
