New ammonium nitrile compounds (I) have 2 medium to long chain alkyl, alkenyl or alkyl ether groups. Ammonium nitrile compounds of formula (I) are new. R1, R2 = linear or branched 5-24C alkyl, alkenyl or alkyl ether groups, preferably 6-10C alkyl; R3 = 1-24C alkyl, 2-24C alkenyl, cyanomethyl or 1-4C alkoxy-(1-4C)-alkyl, preferably 1-2C alkyl; R4, R5 = H in one case and H, 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 1-4C alkoxy-(1-4C)-alkyl, phenyl or 1-3C alkylphenyl in the other; or CR4R5 = 5-7 C cycloalkyl; and X- = an anion. Independent claims are also included for laundry and other detergents, disinfectants, dish-washer detergents and laundry detergent formulations containing (I).
