PURPOSE: A projection TV system having a convergence compensation function and a compensating method of the projection TV system are provided to compensate distortion of convergence by automatically upward-controlling luminance of electron beams. CONSTITUTION: A projection TV system includes a mode selector(215a) for applying a mode selection signal for compensating convergence distortion, a light detector(220) for detecting luminance variations in electron beams moved on the screen of the projection TV system, and a storage unit(260) for storing a reference position from which the maximum luminance among the luminances detected by the light detector is detected before the convergence distortion occurs. The projection TV system further includes a convergence processor(240) and a controller(265). The convergence processor upward-controls the luminance level of a predetermined electron beam when the maximum luminance is detected from the luminance variation in the predetermined electron beam after the mode selector is selected, and controls a cathode ray tube to emit the predetermined electron beam with the upward-controlled luminance. The controller controls the convergence processor.
