PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for switching an input signal are provided to detect a type of an inputted signal and selectively output the input signal according to a detection signal by comprising a common terminal capable of receiving an external input signal(CVBS) and a digital signal(DTV/DVD signal) simultaneously. CONSTITUTION: It is determined whether there exists a color burst of a signal inputted via a common terminal or not(S420). A type of an inputted video signal is classified into a common video signal and a digital signal according to the existence of the color burst. If the inputted video signal is the digital signal, the frequency of the input signal is compared with a predetermined frequency(S440) and thereby a format type of the digital signal is determined(S450). The video signal is switched according to a type of the input signal(S470).
