The invention relates to a device for separating particles (10) from the air, especially for filtering dust in a vacuum cleaner, said device comprising a housing (1) containing a motor/fan unit (11) for sucking air loaded with particles via an inlet (8), guiding said air through a ceramic filter (6), the particles (10) falling on the surface (18) of the ceramic filter on the inflow side, and for blowing out cleaned air on the outflow side via an outlet (19). In order to be able to operate a cleaning device (20) for the ceramic filter (6) as required, the inventive device comprises a control system (22) for operating the cleaning device (20). The inventive embodiment enables the cleaning mode to be switched on and off either automatically by the control system (22) or according to the decision of a user.
