<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an item retrieval method by which a desired item can be retrieved out of many items with simple operation in a short time. <P>SOLUTION: For example, when desired music is retrieved out of many music stored in a hard disk, music names of music stored in the hard disk are sorted in order of the Japanese syllabary, and a list sorted for a group of each initial (a first letter in reading) is made. And music names of initial several music are displayed on a display device, and a screen is scrolled adjusting to rotation of a dial of a rotary encoder. At the time, when the first letter of the music name displayed on the display device is changed, beep sound is outputted, while scroll of the screen is stopped for 0.5 seconds.
