<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for monitoring seat occupant which includes a sensor reactive to a force distribution applied to the seat by an occupant, means for making a measurement of a plurality of positions on the force distribution and a means for monitoring the occupant, based on the measurements. <P>SOLUTION: The measurements are used to classify the occupant. On a basis of the classification, the parameters of the occupant's surrounding environment, such as a seat direction, a rate of deployment of an air bag or a control of a seat belt pre-tensioner are altered.
