PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of rapidly obtaining image information which is not affected by dirt, dust and blemish, even if they remain adhering on contact glass. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an image pickup for reading the image information of an original 1 transferred in a sub-scanning direction at an original reading position 3; an optical system 4 for focusing the image of the original 1 at the original reading position 3 on the image pickup; a front end optical system 9 for guiding the image information of the original 1 to the optical system 4 via different optical paths L1, L2; and an original transferring mechanism 2 for transferring the original 1 to the original reading position 3. In the image reader, the original reading position 3 is provided on the upper part of the contact glass 6 and the peripheral part of a transferring roller 205 having an axis arranged in a main scanning direction, the peripheral part of the transferring roller is colored into a reference color, and an optical switching processor capable of switching the optical paths L1, L2 of the optical system 9 on the basis of read data of the reference color by the image pickup.
