1323340 Feeding strip material to extruders DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP 11 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 43654/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division G3] Extrusion apparatus, for the coating of one or more cords with rubber or plastics material comprises means 12 for positively feeding a continuous strip 25 of the material to the extruder screw, and includes means for withdrawing a coated cord of constant thickness from the die controlled by means responsive to the coated cord thickness. The feeding means 12 includes a shoot 24 which guides the strip 25 into the inwardly tapering extruder feed opening 26 where it is alternately engaged and pushed towards the screw 14 by opposed finger pairs 27, 27a, and 28, 28a of which the fingers of each pair are reciprocated in unison by crands 29, 29a and 30, 30a of shafts 32 and 33, the leading ends of the fingers being inwardly urged on the advancing stroke into engagement with the strip 25 by the engagement of follower surfaces 34, 34a, and 35, 35a thereof, with the inwardly tapering surfaces of the opening 26, and the shafts 32, 33 being driven from the screw drive motor through an adjustable spring loaded clutch. The cord 81 is guided into the cross-head die 41 over a roller 64 and the coated cord 81a is drawn from the cross-head die 41 by a capstan 67, the speed whereof is automatically adjusted to maintain the constant thickness of coated cord 81a by changing the electric current to the drive motor thereof, via linear variable differential transformer 77, the armature whereof is displaceable by a link 73 pivotally attached to one end of a bell crank lever 69, the other end whereof carries a roller 68 which is biased against the surface of the coated cord 81a on the capstan 67 by a strip spring 72 connected to the other end of the link 73. The cross-head die 41 is provided with a fluid heating passage 62 and is bolted to the extruder barrel with respect to which it is pivotally affixed by a pair of interconnected links, e.g. 42. The cross-head die 41 comprises a flow passage 53 for the material supplied, via screen 58 and a perforated support 60, and defined around a cord guide member 44 which is located by a tapered nut 47 screwed thereon and lock nut 47, and is aligned by set screws 51, and is clamped in position by a cap screw 61 and yoke 63 facilitating removal for cleaning.
