PURPOSE: An apparatus for driving a lamp of an LCD is provided to display some region of an LCD panel with high luminance by varying at the maximum range ON-time of a burst mode type alternating current waveform supplied to some of a plurality of lamps depending on video data, thereby clearly displaying the video data such as instant burst or flash. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for driving lamps of an LCD includes an LCD panel, a timing controller controlling driving of the LCD panel and generating a luminance variable signal depending on external video data, a plurality of lamps(112n) driven by alternating current waveform of high pressure, irradiating light onto the LCD panel, and a plurality of inverters(150) driving the lamps and varying the alternating current waveform supplied to some of the lamps in response to the luminance variable signal from the timing controller.
