<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for killing organisms in the course of conveying ballast water in ship. <P>SOLUTION: A voltage of 400 Hz-40,000 Hz of power supply frequency is applied between an anode and a cathode of a free radical generator to form strong ionization discharge of 250 Td-600 Td of field intensity between the anode and cathode. Thus H<SB>2</SB>O and O<SB>2</SB>are ionized, decomposed and excited to be processed into active particles containing O<SB>3</SB>, hydroxy radical (OH<SP>*</SP>) and hydroperoxy radical (HO<SB>2</SB><SP>*</SP>), wherein<SP>*</SP>represents radical. From a main piping, 1/4-1/20 of ballast water is taken out, and excited and dissolved to produce a hydroxy radical solution finally, then returned to the main piping again. In the ballast water transport process, germs, unicellular algae, protozoa or the like are killed for only 2s-20s. The organisms and organic contaminants are finally be decomposed into H<SB>2</SB>O, O<SB>2</SB>and minute amount of inorganic salt. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
