PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing an optically active lactone which can obtain both antipodes of an (R)-lactone and an (S)-lactone from a racemic lactone in high yield and with high purity by efficient optical resolution. SOLUTION: The method for preparing an optically active lactone comprises ring-closing a diastereomer mixture remaining in the mother liquor after depositing the crystal of a diastreomer N-(1-phenylalkyl)hydroxycarboxylic acid amide composed of an (R)-lactone and an (S)-1-phenylalkylamine (an R-S body) or an (S)-lactone and an (R)-1-phenylalkylamine (an S-R body) by the reaction with an acid to form a mixture of optically active lactones, further reacting the mixture with an (R)-1-phenylalkylamine or an (S)-1-phenylalkylamine to separate an S-R body or an R-S body, and ring-opening the S-R body or the R-S body by the reaction with an acid to produce both antipodes of the (R)-lactone and the (S)-lactone in the racemic lactone.
