PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a map for obtaining a reference intake air flow to be corrected based on an amount of an operational status at every actual engine and depending on variations in environment in which a vehicle is running. SOLUTION: The control system of the internal combustion engine is equipped with a KLTA map for determining a reference intake air flow KLTA, that is an intake air flow at the time of making the engine operate at a standard status (25°C, 1 atmospheric pressure), based on a throttle valve opening degree TA and an engine revolution speed NE. Then, every time a predetermined KLTA map correcting condition is established, the control system determines a correction reference intake air flow KH-KLTA, that is the reference intake air flow at a height H of the present position, from an altitude correction coefficient KH according to the present altitude H obtained from a navigation apparatus, and the reference intake air flow KLTA at the standard status that are the map values obtained from the KLTA map. On the other hand, the control system determines a real intake air flow KLACT based on an output of an airflow meter, correcting the KLTA map so as to decrease deflectionΔKL between the correction reference intake air flow KH-KLTA and the real intake air flow KLACT.
