PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the contrast by reducing unnecessary light in the setup period. SOLUTION: If the sustain electrode Z, supplying the ground voltage in the first half of the setup period SUPD in the reset period RPD, is made floating in the later half, the voltage of the sustain electrode Z is gradually increased, following the rising ramp pulse RUP supplied to the scanning electrode Y. At this point, since the increase in the voltage is the same for the sustain electrode Z and the scanning electrode Y, the surface discharge is stopped between the scanning electrode Y and the sustain electrode Z in the floating state. Since the intensity and the duration of the reset discharge thus decreases, unnecessary light generated in the setup period SUPD can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
