PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified and small-sized medium transport device, transporting a medium and transporting the same backward without bending, and a recording apparatus including the medium transport device. SOLUTION: A roller 131 rotated normally and rotated in the reverse direction to transport the medium and transport the same backward is provided with friction braking means 31, 34, 36 for friction-braking, and friction driving means 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 for friction-driving normal rotation only. Thus, tensile force is always applied to the medium in the transport direction and in the backward transport direction by the action of the roller rotated normally and given braking force in the reverse rotating direction, so that the medium can be transported and backward transported without bending.
