A system, apparatus and method for incorporating sensor functionality (100) into mobile communication devices (102) having a host process (204) and employing at least one memory (200, 202), such as a removable memory card (202). Access to the removable memory card (202) by the host process (204) is facilitated using a digital interface (128, 206), and storing sensor data from one or more sensor modules (104) into a local memory (106, 202). The host process (204) of the mobile communication device (102) is coupled to the local memory (106, 202) via the digital interface (128, 206) which is used by the host process (204) to access the removable memory card (202). The sensor data may then be accessed from the local memory (106, 202) by the host process (204) via the digital interface (128, 206).
