<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having high speed wavelength selection characteristics, a wavelength optical filter, and an optical add / drop module. <P>SOLUTION: For example, the optical element 201 to be used as a single cavity type bandpass filter has a basic construction consisting of a first mirror stack layer 203 formed on a substrate 202, a paraelectric layer 205 with a secondary electro-optic effect formed thereon via a first conductive thin film 204, a second mirror stack layer 207 additionally formed thereon via a second conductive thin film 206, and a coupling layer 208 disposed thereon. Thereby the wavelength of light passing through the optical element 201 is switched with high speed by varying the voltage applied between the first and second conductive thin films 204, 206.
