PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a photocatalyst powder capable of responding to not only ultraviolet rays but also such electromagnetic waves with longer wave lengths than those of the ultraviolet rays as visible rays and infrared rays to exhibit a photocatalytic function, and having a wide catalytic reaction area to exhibit highly efficiently the photocatalytic function. SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing the photocatalyst powder comprises spraying a metal powder exhibiting the photocatalytic function by oxidation with a compressed air onto an object for collision consisting of a metal with a melting point equal to or higher than that of the metal powder, or a ceramic or a mixture thereof to make the metal powder collide with the object. The surface of the metal powder is oxidized by heat energy generated during the collision, and as this oxidation is accompanied with formation of an oxygen deficient gradient structure wherein bonding with oxygen lacks as it goes into inside of the metal powder, it becomes possible to respond to the electromagnetic waves with longer wave lengths than those of the ultraviolet rays. It is possible to induce a required oxidation reaction by adjusting oxygen content in the compressed gas for spraying the metal powder. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
