1,080,156. Bowden mechanism. R. RICHOUX. May 3. 1965 [May 6, 1964; July 27. 1964], No. 18541/65. Heading F2K. In a Bowden mechanism having a flexible flat metallic inner member 1 and an outer sheath 4, friction is reduced by balls 13 engaging directly with the member 1 and sheath 4. The balls 13 and member 1 are so dimensioned to permit transverse movement thereof within the sheath 4 and thus prevent jamming. The balls 13 are spaced axially by a wire cage 17 shaped as shown. The outer sheath 4 may, as shown, be plastic or may, Figs. 10-14 (not shown), be formed by helically winding a flexible metal strip (41) which may be surrounded by a plastic cover (45). The inner member (1) has grooves (11, 12), Fig. 2 (not shown), which engage the balls (13). The cages (17) on either side of the inner member (1) are connected for conjoint axial movement either by forming them integrally (Fig. 5, not shown) or by connecting both cages to a sleeve (32) (Fig. 6, not shown). In Fig. 7 (not shown) the plastic outer sheath (4) is externally threaded at one end and is screwed into a metal sleeve (6) which adjustably carries a ball element (37) engaging a spherical seat (38) in a fixed member (8). In Fig. 8 (not shown) one end of the sheath is thickened and externally threaded to adjustably engage the threaded bore of a bracket (39) pivoted to a fixed member at (40). In Fig. 9 (not shown) the sheath (4) has an integral spherical portion which engages a spherical seat in a fixed member. |
