<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing a secondary transfer means and a recording material from soiling due to a detection image for controlling image density regardless of the kind of the toner of the detection image such as a difference in a color, its density or environmental moisture. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 is provided with: an image carrier (intermediate transfer body) 50; image forming means Pa-Pd for forming a toner image in an image area and a non-image area on the image carrier 50; and a transfer means 14 to transfer the toner image in the image area to the recording material S by coming into contact with the image carrier 50.
