<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical device wherein an extinction ratio of a Faraday rotator is hardly reduced even if stress is generated when a magneto-optical element is fixed. <P>SOLUTION: The magneto-optical device provided with the magneto-optical element is characterized in that the polarization direction of linearly polarized light made incident in the magneto-optical element is set so as to have an angle of 5 to 30°to the direction of stress applied to the magneto-optical element. Since by the magneto-optical device, the extinction ratio of the Faraday rotator is hardly reduced even if the stress is generated when the magneto-optical element assembled in the device is fixed, reduction of isolation is suppressed when the magneto-optical device is an optical isolator, crosstalk is improved when the magneto-optical device is an optical circulator and the amount of attenuation can be made to be a desired value, when the magneto-optical device is an optical attenuator. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
