PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of heat-treating a Ti-based alloy and various improvements that can be realized using such heat treatment. SOLUTION: In one exemplary implementation, a method of forming a metallic member is provided that comprises the steps of: forming an alloy into a utile shape; cooling the alloy from a first temperature higher than the beta transus temperature of the alloy to a second temperature lower than the beta transus temperature at a cooling rate of about≤30°F/min. If so desired, the alloy may be treated at about 700 to 1,100°F for about 1 to 12 hr. The titanium alloy treated in accordance with the aspect of the invention may have higher tensile strength and higher fracture toughness than conventional wrought, mill-annealed Ti64 alloy.
