The invention relates to a fire-resistant brickwork in an industrial furnace, inside of which nonferrous metals such as copper, lead, zinc, nickel or the like are molten at temperatures higher than 700 DEG C, particularly higher than 900 DEG C, at least in part, in an oxidizing furnace atmosphere. The brickwork is made of unfired bricks made of a fire-resistant material, and carbon is contained in the fire-side or hot-side surface area of the bricks of the brickwork. The invention also relates to a fire-resistant brick for producing a brickwork.
