DIAGNOSIS OF OIL AND OIL BEARING EQUIPMENT

The condition of oil, particularly insulating oil from a transformer, is assessed by obtaining a gas sample from a headspace over a portion of the oil, and analysing the gas sample. The analysis employs a single sensor, such as a metal oxide semiconductor device. The electrical output signal is subjected to multivariate statistical analysis to provide parameters indicative of the composition of the sample and hence of the state of the oil.
