<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a image part of a face in an object image. <P>SOLUTION: It is confirmed whether the object image in which the image of a face should be detected has lightness equal to or higher than specified lightness (step 82). When the lightness is equal to or higher than the specified lightness (YES at the step 82), a coefficient of normalization cross-correlation between a template image and the object image is calculated (steps 83, 85). The calculated coefficient is compared with a threshold for high luminance to confirm whether the image of a face is included (steps 84, 86). Even when the lightness of the object image in which an image of a face should be detected is less than the specified lightness (NO at the step 82), a coefficient of normalization cross-correlation between the template image and object image is calculated (steps 101, 103). The calculated coefficient is compared with a threshold for low luminance to confirm whether an image of a face is included (steps 102, 104).
