PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and inexpensive discharge lamp lighting device capable of extending the service life of the discharge lamp by reducing an inrush current at startup to reduce stress to the electrode of the discharge lamp without using any large and expensive component such as a choke coil. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device is provided with: a chopper circuit 1 comprising a switching element Q1, a diode D1 and an inductor L1; a capacitor C1 for smoothing its output; a high-voltage pulse generation circuit 4 for starting the discharge lamp La; and a control circuit 3 for controlling the circuits; and it is characterized in that a lighting detection part 32 for detecting the lighting of the discharge lamp La is installed; a no-load voltage Vo of the chopper circuit 1 is reduced to a minimum required value for lighting the discharge lamp La until the discharge lamp La is lit; and a limit value of the no-load voltage Vo of the chopper circuit 1 is raised immediately after the discharge lamp La is lit or after a predetermined time has passed since the discharge lamp La is lit.
