<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the arrangement of N pieces (N≥2) of images formed on an image carrier proper for each print mode, in an image forming apparatus that selectively executes the color print mode and the monochrome print mode. <P>SOLUTION: In the color print mode, images are arranged on an intermediate transfer belt 71 at a first interval d1(a) suitable for the color print mode, that is, at an interval shorter than a second interval d2(a). This makes it possible to set the second interval d2(a) wider by an amount shortening the first interval d1(a), switching time among development units 4Y, 4M, 4C, and 4K can be sufficiently secured, and moving speed when the development units 4Y, 4M, 4C, and 4K are switched and moved can be made slower. On the other hand, in the monochrome mode, adjustment are made so that the first interval d1(b) and the second interval d2(b) have the same value.
