PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt tension control method for a continuously variable transmission capable of controlling a belt tension to a proper one since a regression near the results of an experiment can be obtained by changing a calculation expression for WD coefficients. SOLUTION: In a tensioner device 11, a belt 5 is stretched across a drive pulley 2 and a driven pulley 4, a gear ratio is varied steplessly by changing the pulley groove widths of both pulleys in reverse directions to each other, and a tension roller is pressed against the belt on the loosened side to provide a belt tension. Based on the belt winding lengths L<SB>DR</SB>, and LD<SB>N</SB>of the drive pulley and the driven pulley, the WD coefficients as pressing forces against the pulleys per belt unit length are obtained, ST coefficients as the effective tension of the belt per unit winding length are obtained, and based on the relational expression of the WD coefficients to the ST coefficients, the tensioner device 11 is controlled.
